What’s the damage?

Here is an informal expression that you might hear a native speaker say.

What’s the damage?

In this question, “damage” means ‘cost‘. So the question means:.

What is the cost?

How much does it cost?

How much do they cost?

How much do I have to pay?

NB: Remember that you might hear someone ask this question in a shop, a bar or a restaurant, or some other place when someone has to pay for something. If you hear the question somewhere else, it might have another meaning.

  1. Thnx a lot. From now on I’ve known the meaning of what’s the damage?

  2. It would really be damage if I picked up the tab! Haha!
